BIG SHOP by Harry J Bartlett

big shop lidl

BIG SHOP was a editorial shot in my final year at Falmouth University. I was inspired by Roisin Murphy’s ‘Overpowered‘ album artwork and music videos which feature the singer wearing an eclectic mix of high fashion attire.
I wanted to mix the mundanity of a weekly shop and general routines and outings with the eccentricity of wearing unique fashions.
It was important for my models to not appear to be particularly confident or braggadocious, the clothing was the feature of my shoot but not the narrative. I wanted my models to look like women going about their everyday business in a variety of drab locations.
The garments used were created by 3rd year Fashion Design + Performance Sportswear Design students from Falmouth University.

A-Level Photography students study Harry J Bartlett’s GLITCH portraits

I was pleasantly surprised to find that my friend spotted a video on YouTube where an A-Level photography class had used my “GLITCH” editorial as an artist of reference for a unit of work based on distortion.
George Robinson-White, teacher of Art & Photography at TAHS introduced the students to my work and me as a contemporary artist, looking at my unique take on photographic portraiture.
The students analysed my work and were asked to create their own interpretation of my glitch portraits as well as using me as a contemporary artist reference for their A-Level essays.
I’m flattered to know that my work is being shown to a new generation of potential photographers and artists. I didn’t expect my glitch series to be something students would study as part of an A-Level project or even to be referring to me as an artist.

I thought I would throw a little ‘Throwback Thursday’ on to the blog tonight.
Scar Gazing was a self portrait shoot I worked on in my final year of my Fashion Photography degree at Falmouth University.
This mini editorial was part of my Urban Youth project. Inspired by Jackie Stallone, Amanda Lepore and Donatella Versace, the shoot is based on the growing trend of women and their desire for cosmetic surgery. I wanted to shoot this in quite a voyeuristic way so I tried to capture a paparazzi style approach that you would see in a gossip magazine of women arriving/leaving a clinic.
I had three pairs of prosthetic lips made for the shoot and styled myself up to look like a variety of rich and powerful women that you may see in the media.

Well, I think its about time I gave you all a round up from our graduate exhibition which we had at 55 Dean Street, Soho.
It was such a fun experience to get to exhibit a collection of our work in Central London, surrounded by industry professionals, friends and family.
We had lots of exciting guests attend including; Elle Magazine, Mike Trow (Picture Editor @ Vogue Magazine), Supermodel Sam Way, Candid Magazine and Dash Magazine (to name but a few) and we seemed to get a rather brilliant reception from all who attended.

Final Hand-In

I apologise for the lack of posts recently, but it has been a pretty hectic time of year.
Today I handed in my final project for my Fashion Photography degree at Falmouth University and it feels bloody great!
In the morning I head to London to set up our graduate exhibition; Picture 24 which launches on Thursday @ 6:30pm in Soho.
As I haven’t posted any of my work recently, I thought i’d give you a little teaser of some of the things you can expect to see at the exhibition. I hope you enjoy

Show5 x Lucy Hawes & Eve McGovren

You guys have to check out this fashion film!
This was created by two 3rd year BA (Hons) Fashion Photography students and using garments from this year’s graduate Fashion Design and Performance Sportswear Design students.

‘Arranged, shot and produced in under two weeks, Falmouth Fashion Photography students Lucy Hawes and Eve McGovren present to you an A-Z of Falmouth Graduate designers. Practicing fashion film for the past two years, this is their final farewell film before graduating and heading to the big city. Third of a list of short films they have produced as a partnership, they have formed their own mini production company ‘ELU’. In preparation of the up coming fashion show, this film gives you a taste of fresh talent to leave Falmouth this year. Watch this space.’

#ThrowBackThursday: Disco Bloodbath by Laura Campbell

Film: Laura Campbell
Model & Styling: Harry J Bartlett

An experimental film looking at colour and infrared techniques to create vibrant visuals based on the London Club Kids and the 90’s Clubland scene. The title ‘Disco Bloodbath’ was the name of James St James’ book (later adapted into the film, ‘Party Monster’).

Laura has some very interesting work on her Vimeo account, go and have  a gander. http://vimeo.com/user3209104

#UrbanYouth: A Cheeky Teaser

This may look a little peculiar to most and most definitely looks more ‘Marine & Natural History’ than it does ‘Fashion Photography, but here is a quick teaser image to one of my editorials I’m working on for my final major project at Famouth University.
I can’t say too much about what the editorial is, but all of my shoots are based on the theme of Urban Youth. Each editorial covers a different element/lifestyle/tribes of today’s youth and the digital generation. louse 1

#Picture24 Exhibition: update

As of this morning, we successfully reached our target to raise £5000 for our graduate Fashion Photography exhibition in Central London.
It was a close call but we managed to push through with minutes to spare.
I wanted to say a big thank you to everybody who has pledged money and everyone who shared the links on various social media platforms.
As more and more details happen regarding our exhibition, I will let you know dates and locations as it would be great if people would come down and check out what all the hard efforts and stress have gone towards in the 3 years of doing my BA (Hons) Fashion Photography degree at Falmouth University.
